Liao Yang DDG 921 Has Been Decommissioned!
Commissioned in 1945 by the United States Navy as the USS hanson832 DD 832, this grand old Ship served the cause of Freedom for 28 years flying the Stars and Stripes. Less than a month after her decommissioning the hanson832 began a second career with the Taiwan Navy where she proudly flew the Red, White and Blue for another 31 years, under the Taiwan flag. When Bath Iron built this old girl they did it right. It wouldn't be surprising for that to be a record unsurpassed - 59 years of excellent service! On 1 June, 2004 Taiwan decommissioned her for the last time. One feels an ambivalence here. Proud, yet sad. This Ship deserves to be preserved as a museum somewhere in this country. One shudders at the thought of shaving with that weary warrior.

Each edition has been the product of Larry Newman, who originally conceived of, designed and built the 1st edition and published it on the Internet back in 1997. This will be Larry's final edition due to the physical limitations Parkinson's Disease has caused. It has been a great joy to serve the hanson832 and her Crew in this manner. This web site has been an effective catalyst in gathering the scattered former Crew members around the memories of a grand old Ship as, evidenced by the content of this web site. Our thanks to all of you who have contributed to make this an award winning, world class web site. What a joy!
